AgustaWestland, 400 million Euro contract in Algeria
Algeri , Algeria - The agreement concerns 10 helicopters, 6 AW-101 Merlin and 4 Lynx Mk 300
(WAPA) - Another important contract for AgustaWestland, the helicopter company of Finmeccanica. This time the business has been signed in Algeria. Usually the North-African Country buys military supplies from Russia but, on this occasion, Algeria decided to aim at European products, more sophisticated but also more expensive. The order, worth 400 million Euro, concerns the supply of 6 big helicopters AW-101 Merlin and 4 smaller Lynx Mk 300.
The delivery will start in 2009 and the aircraft will be used for transport, search and rescue functions. The French company Eurocopter, AgustaWestland rival, did not accept the news with favour, considering that in 2006 it signed an order worth 250 million Euro with Algeria, later on cancelled, for 8 helicopters. The Finmeccanica's subsidiary is rising. In November it signed commercial orders to the value of over 300 million dollars (26 AW-139 and 2 AW Grand helicopters) and now AgustaWestland has achieved an excellent result in a traditionally difficult market.
