SAAB gets modernization contract for the SK-60 trainer aircraft
Stockholm, Sweden - The deal is worth about €13 million
(WAPA) - The Swedish company Saab has received from FMV (the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration) an order worth about €13 million for the development and upgrade of the Armed Forces SK-60 training aircraft.
The order includes the installation of a new GPS, audible altitude and primary warning signals for the pilot plus the replacement of certain instruments. The result is a new aircraft cabin layout in which, for example, the altitude and speed go from being displayed in metres and kilometers to providing the pilot with information in feet and knots, just as in today’s Gripen system. The upgrade will be fully completed by the end of 2011.
The contract follows the Swedish Armed Forces’ plans to modernise the SK-60 training platform in order to secure its use until 2017. SK-60 is the military designation for the Saab 105, a twin-engine jet aircraft that first flew in 1963 and that has been used by the Swedish Armed Forces since 1967 for mainly training purposes.
10.8 meters long and with a wingspan of 9.5 meters, this aircraft can carry two people (instructor and trainee). With a maximum takeoff weight of 4,635 kg it can reach the speed of 970 km/h, with a 2,300 km range. It can be armed with cannons, air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles, bombs and rockets.
