Aeroports de Paris will carry out studies for new airport in Iraq

Paris, France - The goal is to manage 30 million passengers per year

(WAPA) - ADPI, a subsidiary of ADP-Aeroports de Paris (company which manages 14 airports in the Ile de France area, including "Charles de Gaulle", Orly and Le Bourget), yesterday signed a contract with the Iraqi Ministry of Transport to carry out the development studies for a new international airport that will be built between the cities of Kerbala, Najaf and Babylon, south of Baghdad.

As the region already receives over 12 million people during the main pilgrimage period, the ambition of the Iraqi authorities is to develop airport facilities up to international standards to receive tourists and pilgrims (around 6 million passengers per year in the first phase with the ultimate objective of handling 30 million passengers).

The ADPI contract covers the studies for: the selection of the site; the master plan including an airport city; the detailed studies for the first development phase that will include a passenger terminal, a control tower, the runways and taxiways infrastructure, car parks, the functional and administrative buildings, a mosque, and a meteorological centre.
