Thousands of people gathered along the Hudson river to assist to the arrival of the vessel, remembering the 3,000 victims of that day that changed the lives of us all. The ship had been commissioned right after the attacks, in order to have a unit that would bring the name of New York in the global war against terrorism.

It can carry several aircraft including MV-22B Osprey tiltrotors and H-53E Super Stallion, CH-46 Sea Knight, AH-1 SeaCobra and UH-1 Iroquois helicopters. It can also carry about 800 troops and 14 amphibious assault vehicles. It can sail at more than 22 knots (41 km/h). (Avionews)
