"Single European Sky", begin the process Community
Brussels, Belgium - Yesterday the European Commission adopted Regulation
(WAPA) - The European Commission yesterday adopted a new regulation that gives the go-ahead for the creation of the "Single European Sky". The "Single European Sky (SES) will become operational from January 1, 2012.
With this procedure - we remember - the European Union aims to improve air navigation services and reduce the cost of flights in Europe (see for details AVIONEWS). Following the crisis in the sector triggered by eruption of the volcano in Iceland, in April this year, the European Council asked the Commission to expedite the process of creating "Single European Sky".
Italy plays a particular role in this project: Enav (Italian Flight Assistance Company) is entrusted to coordinate activities related to SES for the Mediterranean area, the only one - among all blocks involved - to include non-EU countries.
The regulation adopted yesterday by the legal basis necessary for starting up the package "SES". The next step, expected by the end of 2010, will designate a single manager for the entire European network to ensure optimum use of airspace.
With the unification of airspace, the EU aims to cut by half the cost of flights to Europe, reducing both the environmental impact of 10% and increasing to three times the traffic, and further improve the level of flight safety . (Avionews)
