Rome, Italy - Elected in Brussels, he will replace the Gen. Mikhail Kostarakos next November 2018
(WAPA) - The Italian Defense Minister Roberta Pinotti, just informed about his appointment, has expressed her appreciation.
The Gen. Claudio Graziano has been elected by 27 Chiefs of Staff of Defense of the EU member States gathered yesterday in Brussels. The role, for a three year period, will be fulfilled starting from November 2018, when the Gen. Graziano will replace the current President, Gen. Mikhail Kostarakos, in office since November 6, 2015. The Chairman of the Military Committee is the highest military Authority in EU and it is the military advisor of the high delegate for the foreign policy and security of the Union, but it has the task to present opinions and decisions of military kind, adopted by the military committee, at the PSC, besides to produce guidelines to the general director of the EUMS (European Union Military Staff).
The Military Commitee has been established, with decision of the EU Council, on January 22, 2001, with the task to manage all military activities in the EU context, with particular focus on planning and implementation of the military missions. Italy had already obtained the leadership with the Gen. Rolando Mosca Moschini who was in office from April 2004 to November 2006.
This designation, besides to confirm the clear professionalism of Gen. Graziano and the respect that he has at international level, is also a valuable confirmation of effort and appreciation of the Italian Armed Forces in the world. The Italian militaries ensure a main contribution for the EU, not only in terms of number participation, but also for the professional quality demonstrated in decades of participation to the EU operations. The office of Gen. Graziano is also a recognition of the strategic-political role played by Italy, that believes deeply in the need of creation for an European defense system. (Avionews)
