Airplane-helicopter. The Amatho project for housing transmission civil tiltrotor of new generation

To realize via additional technology in 3D an innovative transmission envelope of the tiltrotor (the aircraft that takes off as a helicopter and flies as an airplane) is the purpose of the "Horizon 2020 Clean Sky2 Amatho" project, organized by the Milan's Polytechnic. The housing is one of the critical components for the safety of an aircraft because is exposed to strong mechanical load to a raised vibratory level and to high temperatures. With the additional technology, that allows to obtain also complex structures of great dimensions, over 1000 proves will be realized starting from dust of aluminium alloys and of titanium of high performance. An experimental campaign will be then conducted that will permit to evaluate the mechanical, static and force down performances of these materials. And then technological demonstrators of reduced dimension will be fulfilled, before to pass to the housing production at real dimension to undergo to the test for the final flight qualification. The Amatho (Additive MAnufacturing of Tiltrotor HOusing) project has a five year duration and is organized by the Milan's Polytechnic (Aerospace technologies and sciences Department) together with Mechanical Department. The Swiss University (SUPSI), the ISTEPS (Institute of systems and technologies) and Prima Industrie SpA participate at it.
