Marriage on a Latam plane: the Pope officiated it
The pontiff married steward and hostess with religious rite
On the occasion of his papal trip to Chile, flying between Santiago and Iquique
Paula Podest and Carlos Ciuffati, 39 and 41 years old, Chilean, hostess and steward respectively on the Latam Airlines' airplane that was transporting Pope Francis -in these days in Chile for an apostolic trip- from Santiago to Iquique, in the north of the country. They had asked to the Pope a simple blessing. But then urged by the same Francis they revealed to be married and parents of two girls, but only in a civil manner since 2010. The religious rite was never officiated because the church was destroyed by the terrible earthquake of February of that year.
Simple and with few words Pope Francis: "Do you still want to get married? Are you sure? And you, too? Well, then I will marry you ...", he told to the couple. And so it was: for the first time in the history of the Christian Church, a pontiff officiated a marriage on an airplane in flight. After ceremony the Pope gave two rosaries to them, unique, valuable gift to remember a very special moment.
