Pioneer of the aerospace industry Serge Dassault died
Emmanuel Macron: "A man who has dedicated his life to the development of the French industry"
Serge Dassault, the 93-year-old heiress of the homonymous French multinational leader in aeronautics, aerospace and armaments died in the early afternoon of a heart attack in his office on the Champs-Élysées.
Born in Paris in 1925, Dassault was only 3 years old when his father Marcel founded the "Société des avions Marcel Bloch". The young man then attended the Ecole polytechnique and, loving aviation, he enrolled in the Ecole nationale supérieure de l'aeronautics et de l'espace (SupAero), where he graduated in 1951. The same year, led by his father, he entered engineer at the "Générale aéronautique Marcel Dassault".
Always engaged in politics, he has been mayor of Corbeil-Essonnes in 1995, editor of the newspaper "Le Figaro" since 2004, partner of Mediobanca in the pact of the union and senator of the French center-right party Les Républicains until the autumn of 2017. Serge Dassault took the reins of Dassault Aviation in 1986, after his father's death. Fifth richest man in France and owner of the auction house Artcurial, the businessman and pioneer of the aerospace industry was convicted in first instance for money laundering at 5 years of ineligibility and at a 2 million Euros fine in February 2017. He was supposed to face the appeal process next week.
Dassault Groupe, with assets of over 26 billion dollars, is the French flagship in the aerospace industry and has given life to the Falcon, the world's best known and most used business jet, to the Super-Étendard and to the Mirage and Rafale fighter planes.
"With the death of Serge Dassault France loses a great businessman, the aviation world loses a pioneer, public opinion a great publisher, and I simply lose a friend", tweeted Nicolas Sarkozy while President Emmanuel Macron declared: "France has lost a man who has dedicated his life to the development of French industry".
