Australia: strong wind causes cancellations at Sydney and Melbourne airports

Problems throughout the south-eastern coast of the country

The strong winds that are whipping the south-east coast of Australia today are causing many cancellations and delays for flights to and from Melbourne and Sydney airports, which are among the busiest in the country and the ocean area, forcing some thousands of people block inside the terminal. In that of the main city of Australia (Sydney) 76 flights were cancelled and a runway was closed "for security reasons" due to the wind, effectively reducing the operation to 23 movements per hour, less than half to normal. In addition to problems related to civilian air traffic, the strong wind has also caused some fires in the State of New South Wales, where a modified B-737 aircraft is engaged to provide fire service transporting about 15,000 liters of water or extinguishing liquid. The situation should improve in today's evening and from tomorrow the air transport from the two main airports of the city should return to normal.
