WTO (2). Jab to the US in the war against the European Union

New chapter on State aid to Boeing and Airbus

New chapter in the "war" between Boeing and Airbus and between the United States and the European Union (EU) before the World Trade Organization (WTO), where it was pointed out that the US administration deliberately ignored the request to suspend any tax relief measure against the Seattle aerospace company. For the EU this is proof that Boeing is also supported by illegal "state aid", even if from the United States they have specified as only the reduction of taxes by about 100 million dollars for the State of Washington (Boeing headquarters) has been judged in violation of commercial rules. In reality, both companies were found guilty of having been illegally subsidized by their respective States in order to obtain an advantage over the competitor on the international market.

A "war" fought with sentences by the WTO continually called to try to settle commercial issues between Boeing and Airbus. Even in the latest predicament, the United States emphasized that -with a statement of US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer- "the decision is a victory for the US since the EU accused us of giving illegal subsidies of 10 billion dollars, but it was found that Washington's support is not remotely comparable to that of the European Union vis-à-vis Airbus". The European Commissioner for Trade, Cecilia Malmstrom, has stated that "the WTO ruling confirms our opinion about how the United States illegally subsidizes Boeing".

The next legal battle will be on the A-350 and A-380 programs for which the WTO has been asked to authorize the imposition of sanctions for 11 billion dollars on the European Union (see AVIONEWS). The war, however, is far from the end, and perhaps there will never be, also because both the EU and the United States will hardly give up on the subject, especially as long as they continue to maintain the monopoly of the international market with Airbus and Boeing.
