Defense. The CH-47F ER helicopter program has been cut
Sacrificed to remodel military spending
In order to remodel the military expenses, the Ministry of Defense would have cancelled -according to some rumors- the acquisition of the 4 Boeing CH-47F Chinook helicopters in the ER (Extended Range) version, which should have been deployed at the 3rd Helicopter Regiment for Special Operations (REOS) "Aldebaran" for the transport and support of special forces in operational theater. In 2018 the program was funded for 8.3 million euros and in 2019 it would have received another 60 million, for a total account of 528 million euros. A cut that is closely linked to the Government's desire to continue to remodel military spending following the path begun with the latest Budget law, but which could create difficulties for the Italian Army Aviation (Aviazione dell'Esercito) and Joint Special Forces Operations (COFS) because there will be a "limit" of the range of action missing the possibility to transport more fuel in the tanks. In order to be able to carry out all the operations, in fact, the REOS will continue to install the fuel transport kit in the CH-47F hold, sacrificing space that can be used for the transport of material and men. In addition, the cut also affects the aerospace company Leonardo, which is the prime contractor of the program, also having the responsibility to integrate the on-board systems and carry out the final assembly of the helicopters.
