Hong Kong: law proposal withdrawn

The chief executive Lam could also resign

Today, after five months of heated protests, Hong Kong withdrew the proposed extradition law in China (see AVIONEWS). A decision that was anticipated last September following violent riots.

On Sunday, although the police had forbidden the protests, thousands of protesters took to the streets again to demand the resignation of the chief executive Carrie Lam (see AVIONEWS). According to the "Financial Times" even this request could soon be met: the Chinese government is preparing for a replacement. Under the plan, which will have to be approved by the President of the People's Republic Xi Jinping, the removal of the chief executive should materialize in March.
