Exponential growth of flights between China and Japan
Over a thousand a week
There are more than 1000 return flights between China and Japan every week. A record number of connections that are expected to increase further from March of next year: the authorities have agreed to lift the restrictions on the amount of travel between Beijing and Shanghai and "this is an important opportunity for airports, companies and tourists of both Nations", said analyst Geoff Tudor of Japan Aviation Management Research.
Stephen Wang, chairman of the Chinese low-cost carrier Spring Airlines at the air company's annual meeting stated that the firm has big plans for the Japanese market and added: "Previously, China and Japan had several political difficulties, but it seems that this problem is gradually being resolved. We are looking forward to the traffic increasing also in the future. Japan is a very important destination for Chinese tourists".
However, the increase in Chinese travellers to the "Rising Sun" began already in the middle of the decade with a number that rose from 1.3 million in 2013 to 6.4 million in 2016. A trend that continued in the first nine months of this year. To date, over 7.4 million Chinese have visited Japan, compared to 6.4 million in the same period last year, an increase of 14.8%.
