B-737 Ukraine Airlines plane crashes in Iran: 176 dead, no terrorist attack

A Ukraine Airlines B-737 plane crashed today shortly after Tehran's "Imam-Khomeini" international airport take-off claiming the lives of 176 people. The cause of the accident may have been a technical problem, although given the enormous tensions in the Middle East following the killing of the Iranian general Soleimani (see AVIONEWS). It was initially thought of a terrorist attack by missiles, denied by the Iranian and Ukrainian authorities. An Iranian transport ministry executive, Qassem Biniaz, said the disaster would occur because of an engine that caught fire. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Vadym Prystaiko specified the nationality of the victims on "Twitter": an aircraft board included 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians, 11 Ukrainians, 10 Swedes, 4 Afghans, 3 Germans and 3 British.
