China: helicopters, armored vehicles and 190,000 agents in Guangdong
The 70th anniversary exercises worry: possible repression in Hong Kong
On Tuesday July 30, in Southern China at Guangdong province, 190,000 police officers, armored vehicles and helicopters were mobilized in preparation for the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the People's Republic which will take place on 1 October 2019. It is unusual for the exercise to it moves away from Beijing and this choice, together with the monumental numbers of agents and machines involved in the training, has sparked the concern of a possible repression by Beijing against the violent protests that are taking place in Hong Kong.
A White House official said: the United States was monitoring a "congregation of Chinese forces on the Hong Kong border" but the reasons were not clear. However, a Hong Kong spokesman said he was unaware of the reported positioning and another source in Beijing rejected the hypothesis of troop deployment against Hong Kong.
