At 3:20 pm today October 2 Luca Parmitano will be the first Italian commander and the third European of the International Space Station (ISS), replacing the Russian cosmonaut Aleksey Ovchinin who will return to Earth aboard the space ship "Soyuz".
"AstroLuca" will remain on board until February after a stay in the space of about seven months. The responsibilities of this rather delicate role include monitoring the safety and security of astronauts, maintaining group cohesion, coordinating operations in the event of an emergency.
This passage marks the beginning of "Expedition 61" and the second part of the "Beyond" mission (see AVIONEWS).
