Switzerland will vote on the possibility to increase military aircraft

The election date is scheduled for 27 September

No enemies and no conflicts since time immemorial, but also the need to confront each other on military aircraft. Referendum that is about to take place in Switzerland, neutral country par excellence, seems almost a contradiction. Swiss confederation will be called to express itself on September 27th on the occasion of a much anticipated vote. The question that Swiss voters will have to answer (in total there are 4 others on different topics) is the following: "Do you want to accept the federal decree of 20 December 2019 concerning the purchase of new fighter aircraft?".

The need for such a popular vote is explained by the strengthening of neutrality in the event of a crisis and the use of aircraft in addition to ground troops. Jets currently in use are considered obsolete and destined to be put out of service in a decade or so. The most interesting precedent is that of 1989, when the Swiss were called to decide on the proposed demolition of the entire military equipment of the army; 35% of the voters declared themselves in favor. More recently (in 2014), same voters decided to reject an order of 3.1 billion Swiss francs for the purchase of 22 Saab Gripen fighter jets (rejection certified with 53.4% of the votes). The polls of recent days do not exclude even a hypothesis, even that of the yes to the purchase of aircraft which is not as remote as one might think.
