New South African carrier has an official name: Lift
On-line contest registered 25 thousand suggestions
Wakanda Air, DjyRyNie and Lekker Airlines: these are some of the suggestions that South African citizens proposed online for the new national carrier (read also the article published by AVIONEWS). Eventually another name came up, and the company will be called Lift. Gidon Novick, founder of the low-cost airline Kulula, recently announced the first take-offs no later than next December, inviting South Africans to squeeze their brains and give free rein to their imagination. Through a website created ad hoc, different opinions were expressed and now all that remains is to adapt the livery with the aforementioned four letters. On-line contest recorded over 25,000 suggestions and now all that remains is to wait for the actual industrial plan.
As pointed out in the last few hours by Novick, it will start from a lower tariff base than the current ones, focusing on a fleet of A-320 aircraft. The first flight connection should depart from Johannesburg's “OR Tambo” international airport, while landing will take place in Cape Town. Official website is already active and those interested can register to receive all useful information and updates. Coincidentally, the announcement of Lift's birth came as the government approved the rescue plan of South African Airways, as reported in an article also by AVIONEWS.
