United Arab Emirates interested in Kabul airport

Abu Dhabi Government would like to manage it

In a series of intergovernmental talks with the Taliban, the executives of the United Arab Emirates would have advanced its interest in the technical-logistical management of the international airport "Hamid Karzai" in Kabul. Negotiations have been going on for several weeks. It is a move that would have as objective to hit Qatar, which -since the international military coalition has withdrawn- until today has contributed to the operation of the structure in collaboration with Turkey.

This is reported by the "Reuters" news agency, which cites diplomatic sources. The Emirati executive aims at countering the growing influence of Qatar -adversary of Abu Dhabi- which in Afghanistan is currently the most important interlocutor of the Taliban. In the past, the UAE had managed the Kabul airport while the old Afghan government supported by Washington was in office. However, today it is the Qatari armed forces working with the Quranic students that provide security inside the airport.

Both the Qatari and Emirati militaries participated in evacuation operations from the Kabul airport in the Summer months of 2021. Some time ago, the Taliban asked Turkey for help, but it was Doha that came out on top, before the UAE reopened negotiations with Kabul.
