Azerbaijani military helicopter crash: 14 dead

The disaster occurred during a border police training session

A Russian-made Mil Mi-17 helicopter of the Azerbaijan Border Police crashed yesterday in the Garaheybat air base in the Khizi region. On board of the aircraft, which was carrying out a training flight, there were 16 people, of which 14 died in the accident, while two were injured.

According to initial reconstructions the crash was not due to external interference. So it could be a pilot error. However, the experts are investigating at 360 degrees and for the moment do not rule out any cause: from negligence of the military in command to technical malfunction, to weather conditions. According to local media reports, the surviving soldiers are Lieutenant Colonel Emil Jafarov and Captain Ramin Adilov

The incident comes two weeks after armed fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan threatened to scuttle a ceasefire put in place in 2020 after months of war between the two countries during which more than 6500 people died.
