ITA Airways can access Covid-19 refreshments

They are not state aids, declares European Commissioner Vestager

The difficulties suffered by ITA Airways in the first months of operation can be economically compensated by the Italian State without Brussels accusing Rome again for having given illegal aid. This was stated in recent hours by the European Commissioner for Competition, responding to a specific question.

"Companies that suffer from restrictions imposed by governments because of Covid can get compensations" from the state. It is up to any company to get in touch with their government, then for the government to decide and come to us if a clearance is needed". It also applies to ITA Airways, which "is not Alitalia, if it were Alitalia it would be responsible for the illegal State aid received by Alitalia", said the Vice-President of the European Commission, Margrethe Vestager, who also deals with competition.

In short, no distortion of the market if the Government of Rome economically compensates the losses of the flag carrier. Executive Chairman Alfredo Altavilla recently claimed that revenues were 50% lower due to the pandemic, fuel costs and other factors. The pandemic is an exceptional event, so, according to European rules, member States can grant aid.
