United States: record number of laser attacks on aircraft

About 9,700 reports collected by the FAA in 2021. Never so many before

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced that in 2021 it received 9,723 reports from aircraft pilots who were the victims of attacks using laser instruments from the ground. The authority said the number of these recorded dangerous actions exceeded all previous records, with +41% over 2020.

US civil aviation regulators have developed a web-based visualisation tool that allows all details of attacks conducted from 2010 to 2021 to be viewed publicly. This initiative aims to raise awareness of the seriousness of the phenomenon among Internet users and professionals. In a statement, FAA recalled that pointing a laser at an aircraft poses a serious threat to the safety of the aircraft and, above all, to the passengers on board. In fact, some types of high-powered lasers can blind pilots, making them unable to drive. Since 2010, 244 people have been injured in the cockpit.
