Ukrainian conflict: negotiations start today

Suspended bombing and firefights to evacuate civilians from Kiev

At this moment the second round of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine to try to peacefully end the conflict between the two countries. Moscow confirms that on the table there is a request for a ceasefire. Kiev warns that it will not accept ultimatums from the Kremlin. The meeting, initially scheduled yesterday, according to the Russian news agency "Tass", is being held in these hours in the region of Brest, in Belarus.

Meanwhile, at the moment it would be suspended bombing and firefights near the capital, to allow the evacuation of civilians from Kiev. "We are ready to create humanitarian corridors anywhere, anytime", Russian Defense Ministry General Sergei Sojgu said, announcing that he had put military operations on "pause" to allow civilians to leave the city through some humanitarian corridors, according to Russian news agency "Interfax".

The diplomatic attempt to end the conflict follows earlier talks that took place on February 28th in the Gomel region, also in Belarus. The parties had "examined in detail all the points of the agenda and found some issues where common positions could be envisaged", the Kremlin said. Space for diplomacy then, in search of an immediate ceasefire that few analysts believe in, at least in the immediate future.
