United States protects slots for international flights

Government extends economic aid to air carriers by allowing cutting of routes

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has extended to the 2022 summer season the temporary exemption on the minimum requirements to be able to operate international flights at US airports. Under normal circumstances, in fact, airlines would have to use their take-off and landing windows at least 80%, under penalty of slots reassignment, but due to the pandemic these rules have been relaxed.

Exemptions for international flights will remain in force until October 29 at the following airports: "JFK" in New York, "La Guardia" NY, "Ronald Reagan" in Washington National. Revised schedules are permitted at four other US airports: Chicago-O'Hare, Los Angeles, Newark and San Francisco. Companies will then be able to reduce hourly operations on international flights without losing slots.

Today there is an "evolving and highly unpredictable situation globally with respect to the current impacts of covid-19", Faa explains. "We are extending the current waiver based on global vaccination rates, infection rates and the threat of new viral strains, the continued unpredictability of travel restrictions, and the disparity between demand for domestic and international air travel".
