World's busiest airport is in the USA

China's supremacy is regained: 8 American airports in the top 10 places of the world ranking

Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, Georgia, is back as the world's busiest airport in 2021. The news would not be news at all, if it were not that in 2020 the Chinese airport of Guangzhou-Baiyun ousted it from the highest step of the podium, interrupting a 22-year long series that saw the US airport always in the lead.

This is the ranking of the volume of air traffic in 2021 according to data from the trade association Airports Council International (ACI): the Atlanta airport recorded 75.7 million passengers (+76% on 2020, but -32% compared to 2019), followed by the Dallas-Fort Worth airport with about 62.5 million travelers, in third place the Denver airport with 58.8 million people.

Guangzhou airport, on the other hand, fell to eighth place in 2021 with 40.3 million passengers. While another airport in China, Chengdu's Shuangliu Airport was ninth, down from third place in 2020. US airports, therefore, dominated the passenger traffic rankings with eight airports in the top 10. According to ACI, globally 4.5 billion travelers were recorded (+25% on 2020): more than 50% less than in 2019. The road to recovery, therefore, is the right one, but the way out is still long.
