Finland invests two billions in defense

Objective of Helsinki is to strengthen park means and to enter in the NATO

On April 13, the political leaders of Finland and Sweden, Prime Minister Sanna Marin and her counterpart Magdalena Andersson, respectively, made official the desire to join the Atlantic Alliance. A historic change of direction for two countries in which the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) enjoyed a marginal response from public opinion. However, Moscow's invasion of Ukraine on February 24 totally changed the perception of security in Helsinki and Stockholm.

For this reason, at the beginning of April, the Finnish government decided to increase the funds allocated to the country's military expenditure: 2.2 billion Euros distributed over the three-year period 2023-2026. In addition, the executive announced the strengthening of recruitment: in addition to compulsory military service for male citizens aged between 18 and 29 years and optional for women, there will be increased mobilization of reservists.

For 2022, the Finnish Ministry of Defense has earmarked 700 million euros for the purchase of anti-tank weapons, air defense systems, infantry equipment, artillery elements, field hospital equipment and air and sea defense missiles.
