Ukrainian conflict: the Italian role and the weapons in Kiev

Metsola: "Right to send the heavy ones for danger to our allies under threat"

From sending armaments to Ukraine to the common European defense. These are some of the issues addressed in an interview by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, in Italy for a two-day visit in which yesterday she met the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella ef the Presidents of the Chamber of Deputies and Senate, Roberto Fico and Maria Elisabetta Casellati. Today she also spoke at "The State of the Union" conference in Florence.

"Ukraine is fighting in Europe for its sovereignty and territorial integrity. If a country in that situation asks us for help, knowing also that if that help does not arrive there is a danger that countries of our allies are under threat, then my answer is definitely yes" to sending heavy weapons to Kiev, she told the Italian newspaper "Il Corriere della Sera".

"Individual diplomatic efforts -she added- seen so far have not led to a de-escalation. Every effort for a negotiation is still necessary and a ceasefire must be the priority. But if the ceasefire is based on the 'liberation' of Mariupol by the Russians, then I'm not in. Negotiation is not when the fire is pointed in one direction".

"Now there is no alternative -concluded Metsola- to recognize together that we were not able to foresee a war in Europe and that we need common policies of defense, energy and health. On Monday we will present the conclusions of the conference. The Parliament has given me a strong mandate to ask for a convention with these objectives".
