Russia-Ukraine: Brussels towards sixth sanctions package

Di Maio: "Italy approves. Only peaceful means to bring Putin to the diplomatic table"

Today in Brussels at an important meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, ministers of the 27 countries discussed the situation of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and possible solutions, reviving the need to impose more economic sanctions against Moscow, which is guilty of militarily attacking Kiev. The latter, present with Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleba, pushed for the adoption of this measure.

"Italy does not veto, we want to approve the sixth sanctions package as soon as possible because sanctions are the only peaceful tool at our disposal to bring Putin to the diplomatic table. It is clear that EU rules need to be reformed, overcoming the principle of unanimity, so that one country alone, in this case Hungary, does not block decisions", Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio commented in Brussels today.

"So far we have seen initiatives by individual countries, such as Turkey", he added, "to bring the Ukrainian crisis back to the negotiating table. We have supported Turkey and we will continue to support it but we believe a much more structured peace initiative is needed, which can involve international organizations and the most important geopolitical actors. EU can play a key role by launching this initiative".
