First license for drone freight transport

Maltese government certification, first connections to Italy within the year

The Civil Aviation Directorate agency of Malta's Ministry of Transport has issued an operating license for drone cargo transport to the Bulgarian company Dronamics, making it one of the first companies in the sector to obtain this official certification from a European government, according to the company's announcement in recent hours.

This is a long-awaited announcement, considering that the company aims to start a network of cargo connections with Italy. Later, other routes with destinations in the Mediterranean and the rest of Europe will be added to the network. The Maltese certification allows for medium-haul cargo operations in accordance with European Union regulations.

The first demonstration flights will start by the end of 2022 with Black Swan drones: these are remotely piloted aircraft capable of carrying heavy cargo of up to 350 kg within a radius of 2,500 km. The goal is to use this aircraft to transform supply chains, making deliveries more efficient, faster, cheaper, and environmentally sustainable.
