China-US tension on Taiwan

Fenghe: "Washington stops hitting Beijing's interests"

The tension sparked by the first diplomatic meeting held in recent days in Singapore between the two defense ministers of the United States and China, Lloyd Austin and Wei Fenghe, respectively, at the "Shangri-La Dialogue" summit on defense and security in the Asia-Pacific shows no sign of abating. Among the hot topics of the meeting was the situation on the island of Taiwan.

Washington would stop actions aimed at "besmirching and containing China", stop "interfering in China's internal affairs" and "stop striking at China's interests", Fenghe said. Beijing reiterated that it considers Taiwan, a province deemed rebellious but an "inalienable" part of the territory the Dragon intends to reunify, an "internal issue".

"True freedom and openness is not something that anyone enjoys at the expense of others", Austin, for his part, said, expressing concern about growing Chinese "aggressive activities", and considered "very dangerous", around the island that would increase the risks of accidents. "Confrontation and division will get us nowhere". It is necessary to have a "stable" China-US relationship, considered "vital for global peace", Fenghe reiterates.
