Afghanistan: helicopter aid to earthquake victims

Government mobilizes air force to reach the most isolated places - VIDEO

Helicopters and military transport aircraft and trucks have been mobilized by the government of Afghanistan to deliver aid to the areas hardest hit by the earthquake. The 6.1 magnitude quake occurred Wednesday, June 22, between the villages of Barmal and Gayan in Paktika province in the eastern part of the country. It is the most severe earthquake in 20 years.

Coordinating relief efforts in these hard-to-reach areas is a huge logistical challenge for the new Taliban government, which has become increasingly isolated from much of the world by introducing intransigent rule. Meanwhile, according to initial reports provided by the pan-Arab television station "Al Jazeera", 1500 people have died and 2,000 have been injured as a result of the earthquake.

Below, video footage shows a Russian-made Afghan government helicopter being resupplied with aid that it will then go on to deliver to the areas hardest hit by the earthquake that rattled the country last Wednesday. The images also show men loading bags aboard a military transport plane.
