NATO summit: what was decided in Madrid

Italy leads battlegroup in Bulgaria, Germany positions 20 naval units in Baltic

The meeting of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) ended today in Madrid after leaders of member countries made some important decisions. Among them was the historic formal green light for the Atlantic Alliance's enlargement process to include Finland and Sweden. Not to mention the approval of the largest repositioning of soldiers since the end of the Cold War, especially on the border with Russia.

"Germany is increasing its military capabilities as fast as possible. This means that we will continue to expand our contribution on land, at sea and in the air", German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told reporters in recent hours. Berlin will permanently maintain a commando of 20 naval units in the Baltic Sea and a tank division with 15,000 soldiers on the border.

Meanwhile, as, known, Turkey has been convinced to lift its veto on Finland and Sweden's NATO membership. This is crucial because new memberships require a unanimous vote of the member States. In exchange for Ankara's green light, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan obtained several concessions.

Italy, Council President Mario Draghi explained yesterday, will assume command of the NATO battlegroup in Bulgaria and will also send reinforcements to Romania and the Baltic states. In all, the Italian soldiers sent will be 2,000. Another 8,000 will remain in Rome as part of the NATO Response Force, ready if needed.
