Europe will purchase firefighting aircraft

It's revealed by Commissioner Lenarcic; the negotiations concern amphibious planes

The European Union is reportedly in talks to purchase firefighting aircraft to increase its firefighting capacity. The negotiations concern amphibious airplanes, the British news agency "Reuters" reports. There are several hundred outbreaks currently active, particularly in southern Europe, mainly due to high temperatures and severe drought, and this is putting a strain on operators.

"These aircraft will technically be purchased by the member states, but they will be 100 percent funded by the European Union". The European Union's civil protection budget was about 900 million euros in 2021 and "in the near future it needs to be further strengthened", said Janez Lenarcic, European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response.

Currently, the joint firefighting machine consists of 12 aircraft and one helicopter. So in case of emergencies, individual countries participate in firefighting operations by providing aircraft through civil defense coordination. This happened recently with the major fires in Portugal, Spain, France and Slovenia.
