Qantas will employ managers in handling

Airline seeks volunteers to drive vehicles and handle baggage at airport

Australian flag carrier Qantas has asked its managers to work for three months as baggage handlers. An initiative aimed at limiting inconveniences resulting from staff shortages. The German airport company Fraport, which operates Frankfurt am Main Airport, also invited administrative employees to work temporarily in the handling department in June.

The airline's Executive Manager, Colin Hughes, offered managers, on a voluntary basis, to give their availability to perform tasks such as loading and unloading baggage, driving vehicles, and carrying luggage. This work will last up to three months and will be organized in shifts of 4-6 hours per day, 3-5 days per week.

Specifically, the company is seeking at least 100 volunteers to be assigned to the Sydney and Melbourne airport hubs. This is not a new request for the Qantas company, which has previously asked for help during peak periods coinciding with vacations. This is the result of thousands of layoffs and the 2,000 staff outsourcing carried out in 2020 due to the pandemic.
