Albania-Italy agreement on Civil Protection

End of collaboration on helicopter maintenance services

The Italian Council of Ministers has approved the draft of the project for the creation of the Civil Protection system in Albania. To support this initiative, a loan of 30 million Euros was set up for the construction of a coordination centre, search and rescue structures and for the purchase of two helicopters. It is a decision that aims to strengthen the country's fire prevention system .

"The draft decision between Italy and Albania on the establishment of the civil protection system has been approved. Italy has undertaken to support civil protection abroad for 30 million euros. A civil protection center will be built, then 12 operating rooms connected to the network will be built in all the prefectures". Furthermore, " the purchase of means and equipment for the firefighters is envisaged. Part of the loan will also be the purchase of aircraft for fires during the summer", explained the Albanian Defense Minister, Niko Peleshi.

While Italy undertakes to support the Albanian civil protection, Tirana is experiencing difficulties with the maintenance of helicopters and other aircraft. Therefore, Albania has decided to terminate the contract with Italy for the maintenance services of the rotorcraft, with the possibility that they will be repaired at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) bases.
