China: "Fujian" aircraft carrier on the sea in 2023

First vessel with an electromagnetic catapult system for aircraft takeoff

The Chinese Navy has announced that the new "CNS Fujian" aircraft carrier, launched last June 17, 2022 in the Shanghai shipyard, should put to sea for the first time in 2023. This move is part of the initiatives indicated in October by the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, as functional to achieving the objectives of modernizing the armed forces.

The aircraft carrier's first sea excursions "will contribute to the achievement of the People's Liberation Army's centennial goals", which will be celebrated in 2027, an officer of the naval vessel, Captain Qian Shumin, told the State "China Daily" newspaper.

The "Fujian" aircraft carrier is the largest warship ever built by China. It has a capacity to move around 80,000 tons of water (+50% compared to the two aircraft carriers currently in service). The Chinese vessel also uses an electromagnetic catapult system for aircraft take-off, a system that the United States has only on its new USS "Gerald Ford" aircraft carrier.
