Face to face Taiwan-USA

Meeting in Los Angeles between Ing-wen and McCarthy

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen will meet with US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy today. The face-to-face meeting is expected in Los Angeles, where the Taipei politician will stop on her way back from her institutional trip to Central America, Guatemala and Belize. In view of the Taiwan-US summit yesterday, China shows its muscles, sending 20 aircraft and three American ships to the island of Taipei.

McCarthy, a Republican politician who holds the third most important office in the US administration, will host Tsai in the next few hours, in the American morning, at the "Ronald Reagan" Presidential Library in Simi Valley in California, near Los Angeles. It is the highest-level meeting with a Taiwanese president on US soil since Washington recognized Taipei in 1979.

China has repeatedly warned Washington and Taipei about the meeting between McCarthy and Tsai, at first stopover in the United States since 2019. Analysts expect a harsh reaction from Beijing, but less than that experienced during the visit to Taipei by former House speaker Nancy Pelosi, after which Beijing kicked off a week of air and naval exercises around the island of Taiwan.
