Costa Rica: first female UH-1 helicopter captain

Yuriana Arnesto Segura on board of a law enforcement aircraft

Yuriana Arnesto Segura is the first female captain in the history of the Central American country to take the controls of a Bell UH-1 Iroquois multi-purpose military helicopter. This is an important step which, by inspiring other women to pursue a career in aviation, will lead to the progressive implementation of female figures in fields traditionally dominated by men.

Arnesto Segura's success is a testament to the power of hard work and dedication. The captain joined Costa Rica's Air Surveillance Service (SVA) in 2011, where he performed various law enforcement duties. This is a service supported by the United States through the "Bureau of International Narcotics, Law Enforcement and Justice" program to combat drug trafficking.

Yuriana's journey to becoming the first female Air Force captain began in 2019, when the first Bell UH-1ST helicopters arrived in the Central American country. In the same year, in fact, the "Aviation" program was launched for the training of on-board and ground personnel (mechanics, pilots, police officers), who now operate with these aircraft. A dream achieved with all my heart, but above all after years of training and commitment.
