Aircraft sports. 2016 FAI Annual Report paints a good picture of activities -SPECIALS by AVIONEWS

Lausanne, Switzerland - The Federation has ratified more than 18,000 world records, since its constitution in 1905

The latest edition of the FAI (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale) Annual Report paints a good picture of its ctivities throughout 2016. In it readers will find news on key Conference, FAI’s partners and sponsors, and more. Last year was a busy one, not least in record-setting. Since being founded in 1905 the FAI has ratified more than 18,000 world records, and 2016 saw one that truly caught the imagination of people around the world. In an astonishing and ground-breaking adventure, Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg completed the first solar-powered round the world flight in 17 legs. Many more world records were set throughout 2016, in all its disciplines. Readers will also find news on the rise of drones – the FAI is embracing this new aerial discipline as it booms around the world. And it features the inaugural FAI-Breitling Pilot of the Year. Russia’s Fedor Konyukhov beat the world record for a solo flight around the world in a balloon. The report also highlights several international competitions which, together with partners and local organisers, FAI helped to promote in the media. And it profiles the work of a FAI Member, the Comissão de Aerodesporto Brasileira, as Brazil reorganises its airspace and air law.
