Russian fighter plane intercepts Us Navy surveillance aircraft
"Safe" but "non-professional" interception
A Russian fighter jet Su-27 intercepted a US Navy P-8 surveillance aircraft as it crossed the international airspace over the Baltic Sea. According to what was declared by the American authorities, the interception would have been carried out in safety but not in a "professional" manner, as the Russian jet had approached the US aircraft at a distance of only six meters.
Lieutenant Commander Zach Harrel , a spokesman for US Naval Forces Europe, did not give any details about the matter but assured that US navy ships and aircraft often interact with military units from other countries. The last "non-professional" interception of an American naval aircraft by a Russian aircraft occurred last January. At that time the Russians had flown less than a meter from an American EP-3 and were therefore accused by the US State Department of violating international law and agreements.
