Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un will meet on June 12th in Singapore
"A very special moment for World Peace"
The official date of the historic summit between the United States and North Korea has been established: US President Donald Trump and Pyongyang leader Kim Jong-un will meet in Singapore on June12th.
The official announcement of the significant summit is a further confirmation of the concrete commitment to a path of peace and it comes shortly after the promise of the North Korean nuclear testing site's closure that will occur by May. The announcment arrives also afert the release of three American citizens long held in the labor camps of North Korean regime (see for details AVIONEWS article connected). The american President confirmed the meeting's date and place and said in a tweet: "The highly anticipated meeting between Kim Jong-un and myself will take place in Singapore on June 12th. We will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace!".
The choice of Singapore as the meeting's place is not surprising. The neutral island-state placed in South East Asia that always looks at the West met all the requirements set for the important event. Far more suited to the occasion than other locations such as Bangkok, the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas and the European territories of Stockholm, Helsinki and Geneva, Singapore also hosts one of the few (about ten) North Korean embassies. Considered by the US President an excellent ally in Asia in terms of trade and security, Singapore has already been the scene of important summits in the past including the meeting between the Chinese leader Xi Jinping and the Taiwanese Ma Ying-jeou in 2015 and annual meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
