Investment air base modernization in Albania
According to the NATO spokesperson
The investment of EUR 51 million, only for the first phase, will serve to modernize the Albanian air base in Kucova, in the south-east of the country. NATO spokesperson Piers Cazalet said it in an interview with the local news agency "Ata", commenting on the decision of the Atlantic Alliance to set up its first air base in the Western Balkans in Albania. "The investment will be used to improve the infrastructure, including fuel depots", he said, adding that "the funding is part of the security investment program, designed to implement projects to develop safety across in all the NATO area".
The news on the decision of the Alliance was announced last week-end by the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, according to him the works should begin by this year. Depending on the project, the Kucova base will act as a logistical support for air traffic and as a training base for personnel. "Kucova will also serve as a base for the Albanian national aviation and represents a strategic investment of NATO in Albania", Rama added it. The investment will contribute to "creating new opportunities for economic and social development in the region".
