"Vostok-2018": Putin will be present at the military exercise
In Ukraine, smaller response trainings with 10 NATO countries
At the "Vostok-2018" (East 2018) exercise, which will be held from 11 to 17 September in the eastern Transbaikal region, Vladimir Putin will take part, as reported by the Russian press. The largest training activity organized by Moscow will therefore also include the presence of the President of Russia, who will oversee one of the phases of the maneuver involving about 300,000 soldiers, 36,000 tanks, armored vehicles and other vehicles, as well as more than 1000 aircraft and helicopters.
Even the "neighbor" Mongolia will be engaged in the exercise, as will China, which will send in Russia 3200 soldiers, 900 land vehicles and 30 airplanes, in order to increase the interoperability between the armed forces and to strengthen the political relationship with the Kremlin, but unlike Putin, the president of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping will not be present.
For Europe and the United States, "Vostok-2018" is seen as a threatening maneuver, which demonstrates how Moscow's intentions are increasingly assertive and inconsistent with the West. As a "response" in Ukraine, joint military maneuvers began with 10 NATO countries, including the United States, to increase the capabilities of the Kiev armed forces and reaffirm the Western presence in the country.
