NATO: an air base in Albania in 2023
51 million to renovate the Kucova airport
NATO will begin to modernize the Kucova airport, near Tirana, in order to create a new tactical base in Albania where to deploy transport aircraft, fighters and -if necessary- US bombers. The announcement was made today by General Tod Wolters, commander of NATO Air Forces, during an event in the capital with Defense Minister Olta Xhacka, where Wolters recalled how the Atlantic Alliance has allocated 51 million euros for make the base operational within 2023 after the runway and the control tower are completely rebuilt. In addition, the funds invested will allow the construction of new aircraft maintenance hangars, fuel and munitions depots and a new fire station.
What makes Kucova airport important is its position, which as Wolters explained "is very favorable because it almost always has excellent weather conditions allowing landings and daily take-offs in an uninterrupted manner". The Albanian base will be the first NATO in the Western Balkans and would be a proof of "worthy participation in the Atlantic Alliance of Albania", explained Xhacka asking at the same time- to the member countries to "invest in the country".
