Subject: Organisation of air traffic
Appearing before the Committee on Transport and Tourism at a hearing on 22 November 2018, the Director-General of Eurocontrol, Eamonn Brennan, outlined the operating scenario and the problems related to air traffic delays in Europe in 2018 and, more seriously, painted a very bleak picture for 2019 and the years to come.
This information is worrying because the lack of capacity and of qualified operators makes it impossible to withstand the development and growth of air traffic.
The resulting social and economic costs will be unsustainable unless effective remedies are applied without delay in the short term and these are followed by structural measures in the medium to long term, bearing in mind not least the political difficulties regarding full implementation of the 'Single European Sky' project.
What policy measures will the Commission take in the short and the medium to long term to enable European air traffic to be managed and developed in line with public and business expectations?
What steps will it take, in addition, to encourage transnational agreements affording greater scope for cooperation and integration among national carriers, thereby making for more efficient air traffic management?".
