Alitalia. Vestager: "We continue the bridge loan analysis"

The EU-Italy dispute continues

In an interview given to various newspapers in EU countries, European Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager spoke about Italy and the future moves that the Government intends to make, both for the repayment in favor of investors deceived by some banks for the purchase of dangerous financial products (positively judged) both as regards the Alitalia bridging loan. A theme that Vestager has explained is still "under careful analysis by the European Commission", clarifying also that "the decision that the Italian Government will take on the deadline will not influence the analysis aimed at verifying whether it was a State aid or less". In reality, the temporary nature of the loan is one of the factors used to assess whether this is illegitimate, and if it should be decided to extend the deadline for reimbursement of 900 million euros, the European Commission could intervene.

In addition to this there is the theme of the Alitalia business plan that in Brussels -and not only- are waiting "anxiously", in such a way as to verify whether it is actually possible for the air carrier to return to operating in a positive manner in a fairly short time. Only if this should happen then, perhaps, the European Commission could "turn a blind eye" to the matter becuase the bridging loan could be considered a useful tool for corporate restructuring.
