Germany: balloon crashes
No victims but all 11 on board injured, two of them serious
Shortly after 9:00pm on June 4, 2019, the balloon of a private operator, D-OLAF registration, seems to have overturned due to a sudden gust of wind while the balloon was landing, a few meters from the ground. The incident took place near Marsberg-Bredelar, in the south-eastern region of Sauerland, in North Rhine-Westphalia.
In the wicker basket, which after having touched the ground violently repeatedly bounced to the ground, there were 11 people (four men and six women, passengers between 22 and 59, and the 64-year-old pilot), all of whom were injured, two of whom seriously. According to the first rescuers there would also be burns due to the burner flame.
The balloon had taken off from Korbach airport. The Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) has opened an investigation. According to authorities in August 2011, three balloons from the operator, Wilhelm von Canstein Luftfahrtunternehmen, had already been involved in an accident.
