Future mobility, new generation of aircraft coming

A new class of aircraft is taking shape that could turn the dream of "flying machines" into reality, they are electric or hybrid aircraft that allow vertical lifting, called eVtol (Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing vehicles) that they are proving to have the potential for the future of freight and passenger transport. This is what emerges from the new Deloitte report "The elevated future of mobility: what's next on the horizon" which analyzes the evolution of eVotls and investigates the stages of their future development.

Great progress has been made in eVtol aircraft, but some obstacles continue to slow down its widespread deployment, including the management and regulation of diversified airspace, as well as the psychological barriers that hinder the adoption of new means of transport. Out of a sample of 10,000 consumers interviewed by Deloitte worldwide, it emerges that about half see autonomous passenger aircraft as a viable solution to combat road traffic congestion. However, 80% of them believe that these vehicles "are not safe", or have some doubts about their safety.

The urgency to implement improvements in eVtol (collision avoidance systems) and ground infrastructure emerges. In fact, while on-board technology is in an advanced state, energy management, including battery power, remains a limiting factor. Furthermore, as far as infrastructure is concerned, most cities do not have areas necessary for take-off, landing and spaces capable of hosting eVtol aircraft and their further developments.

Deloitte expects that between 2020 and 2025 passenger eVtol prototypes will be tested and marketed. During this period, the various parties involved will work to define regulation, support the development of the infrastructure network and create traffic management systems. It is also expected that in the following years -roughly from 2025 to 2030- the widespread use of eVtol aircraft for freight transport will introduce a first wave of passenger aircraft, thanks to improvements in reliability and safety. Finally, starting in 2030, eVtol will start to circulate and be socially accepted as autonomous driving.

The effects of the spread of eVtol will have an impact on:

Air traffic management (ATM) systems: the development and implementation of a new complete ATM system will be essential for the widespread adoption of eVtol aircraft. A collaboration between governments and local administrations will be necessary in order to define an universal set of requirements and regulations.

Infrastructures: a large investment is planned for the construction of the necessary infrastructures. It will therefore be necessary to extend the current public-private partnerships and identify new financing formulas.

Aircraft development: the current helicopter manufacturers are at risk in the face of the advent of a new high potential market, that of eVtol. It is thought that the US market alone could be worth USD 17 bn by 2040.
