Italian F-35 aircraft in Iceland for NATO project

Obtained full operational capacity certification

The Italian F-35 aircraft have obtained from Nato the certification of "Full Operational Capacity" (FOC) and from September 27 they can contribute to the "Interim Air Policing" project called "Northern Lightning" for airspace safety of the countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization: Italy provides six fifth-generation single-sea fighters from Amendola (Foggia) in Iceland, a country without its own air defense. Air Force will ensure its presence for about three weeks, also conducting joint training activities with the Icelandic Coast Guard staff.

It will also employ a team of the 16th Wing “Fucilieri dell’Aria” of the Air Force of Martina Franca (Taranto) which will be assisted by "Force Protection" staff of the 32nd Wing.

Other departments of the Armed Forces will also contribute, including: the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa; the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare with the use of C-130J and KC-767 which will guarantee both the transport of personnel and materials and the refuelling in flight of the F-35s; and the 41st Wing of Sigonella that with its P-72s has already carried out the important task of SAR (Search and Rescue) for oceanic safety during the trip to Iceland (see AVIONEWS).
